Step back in time at Allora NESTLED beside Dalrymple Creek just off the New England Hwy between Toowoomba and Warwick, Allora is fondly known as the ‘Best Little Town on the Downs’. Steeped in history, Allora is home to a signed heritage trail, which takes interested walkers from one historic building to the next. Street banners reflect the theme, while a series of murals at the gates of the showgrounds depict local milestones. Allora’s claim to fame is as the childhood home of PL Travers, who wrote the ever-popular Mary Poppins stories. As well, the fallen soldiers memorial, which takes pride of place in Allora, is one of only two Boer War memorials in Queensland. A drive down the quiet, wide main street will make you feel as though you are stepping back in time. Make sure you stop in at St David’s Anglican Church, built in 1888 and regarded

as one of the finest examples of a timber church in country Queensland. The Allora Railway Hotel, which opened in 1902, is yet another historical building that is a must to visit while in Allora. Pop in and enjoy a cold drink and a hot meal. The Railway Hotel offers air-conditioned rooms, a shared bathroom and a continental breakfast. If you happen to make it to this beautiful part of the world during the summer months, you’ll be treated to the most colourful of spectacles. People come from throughout south-east Queensland to check out acre upon acre of fields of sunflowers, arching their stalks to follow the sun across the sky. Allora may be small, but it more than makes up for that with oodles of pure old-fashioned country hospitality. Everywhere you go, you will be treated like a friend; with a smile, a wave and a welcome that will make you want to come back for more.

Set amongst beautiful gardens, Dalrymple Lodge comes with 2 x queen size rooms (one with private ensuite) and another room with 2 x king size beds. Sleeps from 2 to 6 guests and perfect for a romantic weekend getaway or a wedding party.

Allora’s magical past on display producer around the home and town, including the modest gravesite where Travers Goff was buried, Mr Struthers has been invaluable to recreating Travers’ childhood home on a Hollywood set. The couple was also moved to start a restoration program of Travers Goff’s gravesite. Having noticed the grave was dilapidated, the sandstone and marble plaque badly weathered and the lettering missing, Mr Struthers set about tackling a restoration project, which heartened actor Colin Farrell, who plays Travers Goff in the film. Mr Farrell subsequently donated to the project himself. The Struthers’ home is open for viewing by appointment. To arrange an appointment phone Les Struthers on 0428 746 458. Just across the road from the residence is PL Travers park, a green space dedicated to Allora’s most famous author, complete with a granite monument in her honour.

ALLORA’S link to Mary Poppins author PL Travers and the house in which she spent two formative years has been elevated, however not with a magical parrot-head umbrella. Starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, Hollywood film Saving Mr Banks tells the story of transforming the Mary Poppins book into a Walt Disney film, while delving into Pamela Travers’ (real name Helen Goff) relationship with her father, Travers Goff. Les and Loraine Struthers own the Allora property that was both the Australian Joint Stock Bank and home to the Goff family from 1905 until Travers Goff’s death in 1907. When they bought it in 2007, Mr Struthers, an architect, and his wife had little knowledge of the Travers link, with its unique design of greater interest. But their journey has proved uplifting, just like a Mary Poppins umbrella-inspired wind gust. From a location scout knocking on the door, to showing a Hollywood director and

Australia’s most famous: Warwick Rodeo the competitors and crowds coming back each year, with plenty of prizemoney for competitors and plenty of action for spectators. The traditional Australian event of campdrafting kicks off the program, with the first round of the Canning Downs campdraft followed by the first rounds of the Pryde’s Easifeed Warwick Gold Cup. Known by many as the Melbourne Cup of campdrafting, the Warwick Gold Cup attracts more riders and offers more prizemoney than any other campdraft in Australia. Worth more than $55,000 plus a gold cup and trophy saddle, it has for many years been regarded the Australian championship campdraft. Friday night sees the start of the rodeo events, under lights with two hours of action-packed ridin’ and ropin’, along with live music, full bar facilities and barbecue on the grounds.

Come Saturday morning, action starts early in the rodeo arena while down-town Warwick comes alive with the Rodeo street parade featuring floats, clowns, horses, entertainment and a craft market. At lunchtime attention returns to the rodeo arena where there are campdraft finals and rodeo action until about 9.30pm when the hospitality area comes alive with a live band and dancing under the stars. After a full evening on Saturday, spectators return early for the second round of the Warwick Gold Cup on Sunday and then it’s rodeo action all morning before an afternoon of finals. The first final - the Warwick Gold Cup starts at noon and then the top 15 riders in all eight open rodeo events decide who takes home the major portion of prizemoney in the best rodeo action to be seen anywhere in Australia. The 2017 Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals starts October 23-29.

ON THE last full weekend of October every year, the nation’s top rodeo riders and the best broncs and bucking bulls gather for the Warwick Rodeo – known far and wide as Australia’s Most Famous. The riders and the bucking stock come together to try and prove wrong the old saying: “Never the horse that couldn’t be rode, never the rider that couldn’t be throwed”. Warwick Rodeo was immortalised in song by Australian country music legend Buddy Williams in the early 1940s but well before then Warwick had a tradition of horsemanship and great riders to match the city’s sandstone buildings, fine churches, rose gardens and wide, tree-lined streets. Today, Warwick Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft attracts crowds in excess of 30,000 people with competitors and horses travelling from every mainland state to compete. The seven-day program of events keep

History of the Warwick Rodeo BUCKJUMP competitions near Warwick were recorded as far back as 1857 at Canning Downs, Queensland’s first pastoral run. The station was a mere five kilometres up the Condamine River from the centre of town and just across the river from the rodeo grounds. These events more than likely led to a bullock ride and some buckjumping being held in conjunction with the Warwick Show at Queens Park in 1906-1908. In 1926, as a result of a dispute with the council, the society moved to new grounds at the far southern end of Albion St. The land was donated to the society. The first official Warwick Rodeo was held in 1906 and Warwick became the home of the regular Australian Championships from about 1928. In 1931, the open campdrafting competition became the Warwick Gold Cup, named because of the presence of the then Governor of Queensland, Sir John

Goodwin, who presented the very first gold cup to the winner. After the 1931 presentation, the Warwick Gold Cup was backdated to 1928 and the winners of the 1928-1930 campdrafts were presented with their own gold cup. The Warwick Gold Cup, paid for each year by the business houses of Warwick, remains the “Holy Grail” of campdrafting in Australia. Since 1970 rodeo weekend has also been home to the Rodeo Street Parade on the Saturday through the heart of Warwick. After a break in 2016, the parade is back in 2017, starting at 10am in the Warwick CBD.

Grand old Glengallan SHE has battled extinction more than once but now at 150 years of age, Glengallan Homestead has never looked so good. The building survived abandonment in the 1920s, threats of dismantling in the postwar years and then near-dereliction to be reborn at the turn of this century into a thriving business. The homestead, which dates back to 1867, was inhabited by four families in the years through to 1927, when it was abandoned. After years of neglect, the house fell into ruin before being bought by Wally Leggett and Glengallan Homestead Trust in 1993. Years of painstaking work was done to restore the property. In 2002, the house was opened to the public as an important Southern Downs heritage tourism operation. HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION A SMALL but committed team of board members and volunteers has transformed Glengallan Homestead in the past 15 years,

from a teetering ruin into a successful tourism operation. Today, the Glengallan Heritage Trust sustains two full-time positions, a heritage centre and a site manager, as well as two weekend casuals who run the busy cafe. The heritage home has more than 10,000 visitors pass through its doors each year. Board chair Donna Fraser said the not-for-profit organisation was run by experienced business people. “We understand what it takes to keep a business viable and I think that expertise is why it’s been a success,” she said. “Anything we make from entry fees, profits from our markets, events and grants gets ploughed back into the running and maintenance of this grand home. “Insurance, painting, general repairs, staff wages – there are a lot of expenses and not much left over,” Ms Fraser said. “Australia is a young country and we need to preserve our heritage sites for future generations,” treasurer Col Smith added.

How Warwick became the Rose City A ROSE by any other name… would not be as sweet as Warwick. Warwick saddles itself with the title of the Rose and Rodeo City. It is a title well-placed as Australia’s most famous rodeo is staged by the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society. In 1964 the Warwick City Council adopted the rose as its floral emblem and later added that it be a red rose. The decision followed commitments by a Warwick Horticultural Society garden judge in 1961 who was impressed by the quality of the rose that he stated the city could easily be referred to as the Rose City. But let’s face it, you can’t really be the Rose City without a rose to call your own. So dignitary of the day Les Meiklejohn led the charge for the naming of our city’s very own rose. Visitors to the council chambers these days can see the Warwick Rose in all its glory in a painting in the corridor. According to Enchanted Garden owner

Claire Cunningham, the City of Warwick Rose was named at some point during the 1980s. She said a bulk batch was bought and planted all around town in both private gardens and public areas. “Well a lot was made of Warwick being the Rose City so we had to have our own”, Mrs Cunningham said. “There were some beautiful private rose gardens back then, as there are now”. Unfortunately for the hybrid tea rose, over the years’ drought and various conditions have meant many of those originally planted haven’t survived. “It’s hard to find them now”, Mrs Cunningham said. “I called and tried to get them but no-one had the Warwick Rose”, Mrs Cunningham said. You can always tell the rodeo is growing near in Warwick as Palmerin St bursts into colour with hundreds of beautiful roses every October.

Also standing proud is the TJ Byrnes statue at the Palmerin and Grafton St intersection. The former Queensland premier was born in Warwick. Another icon is Tiddalik, the mythical frog. Locals know if Tiddalik goes under water, they’re in for a big flood.

3. QUEEN MARY FALLS THE majestic Queen Mary Falls is a sight to behold. Enjoy the view from the top or take the path down to the bottom of the falls and sit in the cool, lush rainforest surrounds. Make sure you take your camera and then when you’re done, stop at the kiosk across the road from the car park. You can buy some seeds and feed the birds – you’ll be sure to make plenty of new feathery friends. 4. LET YOUR CHILDREN RUN WILD WARWICK’S Australiana Park features a 30m flying fox – a hit with youngsters. Leslie Park is home to a youth space and two playgrounds, while Queens Park features exercise equipment near the OO Madsen Bridge and a skate park near the River Walk. 5. HISTORIC SANDSTONE BUILDINGS WITH most dating to the late-1800s, take in a little history with a walk through Warwick. Gems to take a closer look at include St Mary’s Church, the town hall, the courthouse and police station, Masonic Temple, Warwick Railway Station and many more.

SCOTS PGC College offers students a quality education from Prep to Year 12 as a co-educational day and boarding school. Foundation Scholarships for boarding students entering Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2018 are now available. As a specialist co-educational boarding school we prepare our young people for the real world by introducing them to an independent and responsible approach to life. Our boarding environment provides a safe and secure space with excellent academic tutoring support.

Our boarding facilities are purpose-built. Boarders at SCOTS enjoy their own personal space (room) and have access to common areas where they can relax, play games and enjoy additional stimulation. Students enjoy healthy meals prepared in consultation with a dietician and have access to monitored Wi-Fi. All students are cared for by live-in residential supervisors and have a routine that helps them manage the time-scheduling of the day so they

can complete school, extra-curricular activities, study and dining, as well as have some down-time. Weekend facilities at the College include an outstanding gymnasium, modern Industrial Technology, Graphics and Manual Arts Centre, computer rooms, library and resource centre, and extensive outside sporting facilities. We also deliberately bring the outside world into boarding education so that it can play a broadening role in adolescent development. A modest annual levy entitles a boarder to many organised weekend activities and school socials throughout the year. Optional weekend activities include trips to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Toowoomba for cultural and ‘fun’ outings. To find out more, contact the Enrolments Officer on 07 4666 9808 or visit us online at scotspgc.com.au

The College has separate boarding campuses for boys and girls allowing students to enjoy the benefits of single and mixed gender activities. Our boarding emphasis provides experiences and support that nurture effective, resilient and enthusiastic learners. We are sensitive to the needs of adolescents whilst still promoting sound personal development. This means we seek to strike a balance between personal freedom and group responsibility; the school day and ‘home’; learning and self-motivation.

THE name Yangan literally means going forward or upwards. A small friendly town surrounded by mountains and rich farming lands, Yangan is known as one of the best towns on the Downs. Situated on Swan Creek in the Swanfels Valley, it was first known as Upper Swan Creek before the name was changed to Yangan in 1887, an Aboriginal word thought to mean going forward or upwards. And forward and upwards is exactly what this lovely little town has been doing during the past 100 years. With its own general store for everyday needs, a local post office, butcher and drinking hole the locals are pretty self-sufficient. Drop in to the pub for a cold drink, grab a cup of coffee or even a delicious hot meal. While you’re out of the car, make sure you take the time to wander through the main street of this lovely little town, which continues “going forwards and upwards”. It’s the perfect opportunity to take a rest from driving and a chance to stop and meet the friendly locals. You may even find yourself falling in love with the pace of life at Yangan.

Discover the scenic beauty of Killarney KILLARNEY is one of the scenic gems of south-east Queensland. Its rolling foothills, deep secluded valleys and dramatic waterfalls provide picture perfect views that will awaken your imagination. The town itself was built upon the timber and dairy industries and named by Irish settlers. Today Killarney is the centre of a thriving mixed-farming district, producing potatoes, onions and grain, to name a few. The five waterfalls surrounding Killarney make this area a popular

destination, with families coming from the nearby coastal regions for scenic day trips. When you’re visiting be sure to check out Teviot Falls, Queen Mary Falls, Daggs Falls, Browns Falls and Upper Browns Falls. During wet weather there are two additional falls, Black Fella Falls and Jack Brunton’s Falls, which can be seen tumbling down the cliffs surrounding Killarney at the bottom of the Cambanoora Gorge. On the way through Killarney, pull in at the historic pub for a cold beer, then the Killarney Co-Op to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the falls. Drive east into the mountains for Browns Falls, Daggs Falls and then the spectacular waterfall at Queen Mary Falls, (part of Main Range National Park) where Spring Creek tumbles dramatically over a 40-metre cliff. There are many walks for you to enjoy that suit all different skill levels. Each walk is surrounded by trees and has wildlife roaming freely and at the end of each you will be pleasantly surprised to see a spectacular waterfall. After a big day of walking and sightseeing head back into Killarney and pull into the Killarney Heritage Centre in Willow St for a little bit of history before a wander down the lovely main street to find a bite to eat. When it comes time to rest your weary head make your way to the Killarney Sundown Motel and put your feet up. And then when it’s time to go home, just remember one thing – make sure to come back soon.

Located just off the main road of Killarney in Pine Street, the Killarney Sundown Motel is the place to stop and relax. Owners Faye and Trevor are committed to providing guests with clean, comfortable and affordable accommodation. The Sundown Motel is even pet friendly. Magical fireflies STEP into a magical world of light and discover the beauty of fireflies in the rainforest. A visit to Queen Mary Falls is wonderful and Louise Brosnan said the experience was as enchanting as it sounded. “It is thrilling each evening we see the first flash of a firefly,” she said. “Standing at the base of the falls, watching the first stars as the fireflies lazily float by is a magical experience.” Fireflies are on their hunt to attract a mate, beginning their show in late October. The lights are expected to continue until mid-December. “The best time to see the firefly display is 30 minutes after sunset,” Ms Brosnan said. She said it was best to time your walk to enjoy last light at the lookout before continuing down to the base of the waterfall as night falls. Queen Mary Falls is also home to a small colony of glow worms, which are visible all

year round at the base of the falls. “Firefly is a very poetic name but these insects are not really flies, rather a small beetle about 8mm long,” Ms Brosnan said. “Their flashing display is to attract the attention of a mate during the six-week breeding season.” Visitors are asked to bring sufficient torches, allowing at least one torch between two people. Due to the unevenness of the walking tracks, it is advised to stay on the path and walk in single file.

meeting staged in March of the following year, this bitumen circuit has sealed its place as a preferred venue on many Queensland’s racing club calendars. The Australian Superbike Championships are held at the raceway, so get into the stands and experience the thunder as the sound barrier is challenged by the spectacle of superbike racing. For those who prefer to appreciate polished chrome in a quieter, more elegant atmosphere, the parks and laneways of Warwick often play host to show and shine events. Vintage car and motorsport enthusiasts alike are afforded the opportunity to the dust off their hot-rods, Datsuns, VWs, Buicks and V8 Supercars, and put them on display for devotees. This May will be no exception, as the town welcomes not only a number of motorsport events, but also plays host to one of the premier interstate equine events, the Barastoc Interstate Polocrosse Series, held in conjunction with the Shell Cup Carnival, between Queensland and New South Wales at Morgan Park. Warwick is also home to the Allman Park Racecourse and annually hosts the Warwick Rodeo at the Warwick Showgrounds – known as the biggest rodeo in Australia.
